Part 3: When should a test be repeated?

Once packaging passes the initial test, it is common for a second, longer test to be scheduled before the final order is placed. But if the initial test results are not ideal, it may be worthwhile to retest. For example, factors including equipment failure unrelated to the packaging or minor differences in color that can be easily adjusted would justify a repeated test.  

If fixing the test will require more than minor adjustments, it may be time to reconsider the product packaging. At this point, the processor would be restarting the packaging selection process. However, if the correct information was gathered during the initial test and systematically recorded, it should provide valuable insight and statistical evidence to support the next step in the selection process and ensure that the next round of testing is successful.

With so many variables to consider when selecting a food packaging system, a production line test is a critical step to bring all the pieces together. Carefully planning and structuring the testing day can help processors get the most out of the investment and ensure that the correct packaging is selected.
